چکیده

This article presents an overview of the application soil bioengineering techniques, also modeled as natural engineering, in state Sergipe, northeastern Brazil, showing importance integrating living and inert elements to protect river banks from erosion. The employed techniques are different, ranging characterization susceptibility erosion use biotechniques, considering knowledge areas agronomic forestry civil biology, pedology, geology, geomorphology geotechnics. It is approach that uses methodologies a multidisciplinary way, seeking maximize synergies (for example, engineering combine materials ways help plants develop increasingly efficient systems). considers maintenance-cost optimization conduction works, using different materials, differing traditional which predominantly materials. research work carried out locations sought availability local such rocks, geotextiles made fibers native flora or even available on market, addition species recovery slopes, according ecological conditions Brazil. Size technological reach were considered, biotechnical aesthetic objectives adapted situations.

Waterborne Toxoplasmosis, Northeastern Brazil

Two waterborne outbreaks of toxoplasmosis have been described recently in southern Brazil. We present data from a community-based study of pregnant women in northeastern Brazil. Consumption of homemade ice was the only variable associated with seropositivity (adjusted odds ratio, 3.1, 95% confidence interval, 1.53-6.24). Our results suggest that water is a source of infection with Toxoplasma go...

Melioidosis, Northeastern Brazil

Melioidosis was first recognized in northeastern Brazil in 2003. Confirmation of additional cases from the 2003 cluster in Ceará, more recent cases in other districts, environmental isolation of Burkholderia pseudomallei, molecular confirmation and typing results, and positive serosurveillance specimens indicate that melioidosis is more widespread in northeastern Brazil than previously thought.
